From her crown to her toes, Beyoncé is all things flawless. But as a woman of color, her hair is always under public scrutiny, so when Beyoncé’s hairstylist posted photos of her “natural” hair on Instagram, the Beyhive wasn’t sure what to think.
Neal Farinah captioned the photo, “SLAY ME THAT NATURAL CURLY HAIR,” which left many users confused about his choice of words.
Farinah posted photos of the singer’s hairstyle for the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year Awards, but commenters instantly started arguing over whether or not that was Beyonce’s real, natural hair.
Some thought that Farinah’s word choice would bring undue criticism toward Beyoncé’s tresses.
“LOL, it’s obvious she has extensions in the back. I hope he means natural as in natural weave texture. If not, he is setting her up to get clowned,” one commenter noted.
Others interpreted the “natural curly” statement as referring to the extensions, rather than Beyoncé’s actual hair.
Beyoncé’s worn everything from honey blonde waterfall ponytails to corn rows to black waves, so she’s known to slay in many versatile looks, which the Beyhive is well aware of. So it’s not a stretch to think he may have just meant the overall style instead of her actual hair.
After facing scrutiny for calling Beyoncé’s hair “all natural,” her hairstylist Neal Farinah uploaded a video sharing his thoughts on Black women’s hair.
“Sometimes women make choices and Black women are not the only one[s] who wear wigs and weaves and pieces. Remember that. And underneath wigs and weaves, Black women have some of the most beautiful curly hair. It’s a choice one makes. And that’s the choice a Black woman choose[s], to wear wigs or weaves, if she wants to. Ain’t nothing wrong with it. So the myth about Black women not having hair, y’all think again cause [they ] have some of the most beautiful texture [of] hair. Recognize,” Farinah said on Instagram.
If THAT wasn’t enough, Beyoncé’s own mother, Tina Lawson, posted a photo of Beyoncé’s hair with the caption, “INCHES!!!! So happy my baby’s hair grew back !! She is going to get me.”
Tina Knowles picture of Beyoncé, settling the debate about whether her hair is real or not. And now that Mama says its real, it’s over!
