In late October of last year, Kevin Gates was sentenced to 180 days in jail for battery after kicking a female fan. Now, XXL has confirmed with Polk County Jail, where Gates is being held, that he will be released on March 24th.
The Islah rapper tried to use Florida’s “Stand Your Ground Law” for his defense to no avail, as he claims the fan, Miranda Dixon, kept aggressively grabbing on his leg. His motion was denied, and while the prosecution asked that he serve 60 days behind bars, the judge tripled the sentence, making it 180 days in total.
The incident was addressed on Gates’ record “The Truth,” where he claimed that the woman had grabbed him inappropriately. “All on the news bout what happened in Florida,” he raps. “Posted on Worldstar a iPhone recorded / She grabbed my dick overreacted, I’m sorry / Two or three times I had already warned her.”
Back when Kevin’s was sentenced, his wife and business partner Dreka Gates criticized the sentence. “She claims she fainted, but yet she and her friend stayed at the club at the front of the stage even after this incident,” Dreka wrote about 19-year-old Miranda Dixon, the girl who was kicked, in a caption for a video showing an alternate angle of the incident. “She also acquired a civil attorney early on…what does that tell you? She also touched him FIRST (more than once) without his consent but yet he was the one sentenced to jail today for the same crime. She and her friend also had very conflicting stories and were tripped up in many lies today in the courtroom.”
